Lightning Rod

This web page describes what a lightning rod is.

What Is Lightning Rod?

It is a metal conductor mounted on a building, or other structure, as part of a system to prevent the building, or other structure, from being damaged by the electrical energy in a lightning strike.

It is connected to earth; the lightning rod diverts the electrical energy in a lightning strike to earth.

The image below shows an house with no lightning rod (left) and a house with a lightning rod (right).

It routes the electrical energy in the lightning strike to earth via the green cable. The earth spike is a metal spike hammered into the ground (earth).
